The heart on Hinge means Like: you tap it beside a specific photo or prompt, optionally add a comment, and send it. A blinking, beating, flashing, or pulsing heart is normally an interface animation or attention cue, not a hidden score. Hinge also does not currently display standard read receipts for ordinary chat messages.

What the Heart Means
Unlike a simple whole-profile swipe, Hinge attaches a Like to one piece of content. Tap the heart next to a photo or prompt. You can send the Like alone or add a comment explaining what caught your attention.
The recipient sees the profile item you selected. If they accept, you match. A heart does not mean the person already liked you; its exact function depends on whether you are viewing Discover or an incoming Like.
Blinking, Beating, Flashing, or Pulsing Heart
Searchers use several words for a moving heart animation. Hinge can test interface cues by version, market, and account, so one animation may not appear for everyone. In general, motion around the heart draws attention to the Like action or confirms an interaction.
It is not documented as a secret measure of attraction, a live profile viewer, or proof that the other person is online. If the current screen includes text, trust that label instead of a social-media rumor.
X and Undo
The X skips a profile in Discover. Hinge says the skip informs its recommendation system that you were not interested. The curved undo arrow can restore only the most recent skip when available. If the app says undo is unavailable, Support cannot manually restore that profile.
Skipping does not block or report a person. Use the three-dot menu and the appropriate Remove or Report option when safety or unwanted contact is the issue.
Star, Standouts, and Roses
The star opens Standouts, a curated feed of profiles and content receiving attention or considered relevant. A Rose is the interest action used there and can also be sent elsewhere when offered.
Hinge says a Rose appears near the top of the recipient's Likes You screen. It creates visibility, not compatibility. Add a specific comment and reserve Roses for strong fits.
What Is Take Another Look?
Take Another Look is a second-chance feature that may surface profiles you previously skipped. It is useful when you swiped too fast or changed your mind, but it is not a complete archive of every skipped person.
Availability and eligibility can vary. If a profile does not return, Hinge does not offer a general search function for finding a specific person. Slow down in Discover instead of relying on recovery.
Does Hinge Have Read Receipts?
Hinge does not currently display a standard Read, Seen, or timestamp indicator for normal messages. You can know a message received a reply or reaction, but you should not infer when it was opened.
The official matching and chatting guide explains messages, emoji, message Likes, and notifications without listing a recipient-facing read status. That supports the current practical answer, but Hinge can test new features later.
Do not use notification timing, profile changes, or activity badges as a substitute for a read receipt. They do not prove someone saw a particular message.
Chat and Notification Icons
The chat bubble opens Matches and conversations. A badge or dot on that tab usually means new match or message activity. Hinge also allows chat-specific notifications for selected conversations and global message notifications in Settings.
Notifications tell you that an event occurred; they do not tell the sender that you opened a message. If a message fails to send, check your connection, reopen the app, and follow Hinge login and support troubleshooting.
Compass and House
In profile vitals, the compass represents the location someone chose for meeting people. The house represents Hometown. These can be different. Hinge does not automatically update the saved location at every login; see the Hinge location guide.
Signals Badge
Signals is a limited-test badge reflecting recent patterns of thoughtful participation plus baseline requirements such as profile completeness and Selfie Verification. It cannot be purchased and does not guarantee a reply. Our Hinge Signals explanation covers every criterion.
Avoid Reading Too Much Into Icons
Icons summarize app actions, not a person's feelings. A Rose is stronger visibility, not consent to a date. An active badge is context, not a promise to reply. No read receipt means you lack information, not that a message was ignored.
Focus on actions you control: a complete profile, clear photos, comments tied to real details, and respectful follow-up. If people view your content but rarely engage, review your Hinge prompts rather than searching for hidden icon meanings.
Bottom Line
The Hinge heart sends a Like to a specific photo or prompt. Animated hearts are interface cues, X skips, undo restores the latest eligible skip, the star opens Standouts, and Roses add prominence. Hinge does not currently show ordinary chat read receipts. When an icon differs from this guide, use the text label in your current app.
