UK Passport Photo Requirements

A British passport photo is 35 × 45 mm on paper, with the head between 29 and 34 mm from chin to crown. An online application takes a digital photo instead: at least 600 × 750 pixels, between 50 KB and 10 MB, taken within the last month.

01 · Photo size & digital dimensions

Print format
35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm), portrait orientation.
Head height
29–34 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head on the printed photo.
Digital upload
At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and between 50 KB and 10 MB in file size.

02 · File format & print finish

Accepted formats
JPG for the online application; PNG is accepted by most photo desks for printing.
Hardcopy
Print on photo paper at 100% scale — a scaled print changes the head height out of range.
Upload tip
Send the original file, not a screenshot or an image forwarded through a messaging app.

03 · Background & lighting

Background
Plain light-coloured background — cream, light grey or white — with clear contrast to your face and hair.
Lighting
Even light with no shadow on the face or on the background behind you.
Red eye
Red eye is a rejection reason; turn off the flash and use daylight instead.

04 · Position & expression

Pose
Facing forward and looking straight at the camera, head upright.
Expression
Plain expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and visible.
Framing
Include head, shoulders and upper body in the original — GOV.UK crops for you, so do not pre-crop tightly.

05 · Glasses, hair & headwear

Glasses
Do not wear glasses unless you have to. If you must, no sunglasses or tinted lenses, and no frame, glare or shadow over the eyes.
Hair
No hair in front of the eyes; nothing may cover the face.
Headwear
No head covering unless it is worn for religious or medical reasons.

06 · Recency & natural appearance

Photo age
Taken within the last month — the shortest window of any passport we publish, and shorter than the six months most people expect.
Editing
The photo must be unaltered by computer software: no retouching, no filters, no background replacement beyond the plain backdrop itself.
Practical tip
Turn off beauty mode before you shoot; smoothed skin counts as an alteration.

07 · Taking a photo at home

Phone photos
GOV.UK expects someone to help you take the photo during the application; a selfie is a poor substitute.
Camera setup
Lens at eye level, phone steady, front camera only if it is the higher-resolution one.
Clothing tip
Avoid a white top against a white wall — the contrast rule applies to the clothing outline too.

08 · Final check before submission

Review the image
Check focus, eyes, lighting and that nothing is in front of your face.
Review the file
Confirm the exported file is at least 600 × 750 px and under 10 MB before uploading.
Acceptance
HM Passport Office decides; a photo that passes these checks can still be refused if the application details differ.

Why make your passport photo with RadiantSnaps?

A simpler way to prepare your photo, wherever your next trip takes you.

01

At home, on your schedule

No appointment or trip to a photo studio. Start with a photo from your phone.

02

Your face stays yours

Cropping and background removal preserve your original facial features.

03

Measurements you can see

Review head height, eye position and photo dimensions before downloading.

Why do passport photos get rejected?

The right size is only the beginning. These issues may need a new photo, not another crop.

01

Blur or beauty filters

Cropping cannot restore missing detail. Start again with a sharp, recent, unfiltered portrait.

02

A cropped head or shoulders

Retake the photo with room around your head and shoulders. Do not generate missing body parts.

03

Shadows, glare or hidden features

Face soft, even light. Follow your authority’s rules for glasses, head coverings and expression.

04

The wrong document or submission route

Printed and online applications can use different specifications. Check the document, dimensions, pixels and file format.

Customer reviews

Megan H.

“Honestly, this was much easier than I expected. I took the photo at home, adjusted it using the guides, and had everything ready in just a few minutes.”

Chris P.

“The size and positioning guides were really helpful. I could see what needed fixing right away instead of guessing whether the photo would meet the requirements.”

Nina Patel

“I was a little worried the editing would make the photo look unnatural, but it still looks completely like me. It just fixed the framing and dimensions, which is exactly what I wanted.”

J. Romero

“Saved me a trip to a photo studio. I took a few pictures on my phone, picked the best one, and got the passport format sorted at home.”

Theo

“Simple and straightforward. The final check made it much easier to confirm the crop, head position, and spacing before I saved the photo.”

Hannah W

“I’ve tried other passport photo tools before and they felt way more complicated. This one was quick, clear, and didn’t over-edit my face. The finished photo still looked natural.”
